About the sandwich:
Sandwich was boiled egg, cheddar and rocket, with mayonnaise a bit of marmite! Tasted heavenly! We had trecked into the clouds and felt pretty elated eating that sandwich, as we were quite probably the only people in Scotland with the sun on our backs that afternoon.

A 2 hour hike up the Pinnacle with my wife turned into a nearly 4 hour expedition!  We overshot the lookout, missing the intersection to either end up here for lunch or continue on another steep 3 mile climb. We climbed through fallen trees and boulders for another 45 minutes before realizing we had done something wrong.

This Italian Vermonter was exactly what we needed when we finally arrived! Serious lunch with a view!

About the sandwich:
Home-roasted turkey breast, brie, avocado, kale, and strawberries between 2 slices of a nice rustic Italian loaf. Meaty, gooey, salty, sweet, and even some ruffage thrown in for the hippies!

This was eaten right before my first turns of the season. Though my snowboarding felt a little rusty my sandwich game proved to be in deep-winter form, making for a most memorable alpine sandwich.

About the sandwich:
I whipped this little guy during my lunch break. Its a toasted bun, a hamburger patty, sliced gouda, bacon, fried egg over easy, a square hash brown, with fresh made hp style sauce, and mayonnaise. Don’t forget the 1/2 inch thick tomato slice! The taste was off the charts. This was no ziplock wonder. It was freshly fried in the coastal mountains. It was so tasty I felt like I was doing something wrong.

The “Unbekannt Österreichisch Sandwich”

Some sort of spiced/seasoned turkey slices, a slice of gruyere, some pickled vegetables, cream cheese, garden lettuce, and magnificent fresh hearty bread.

From: Kim
Location: Zimba, Austria
About the sandwich:
This sandwich, so named the “unknown Austrian sandwich” because the Austrians I was hiking with did not know the English words to tell me what it contained, made an already amazing hike in the Austrian Alps become a next level experience. The Zimba peak seen in the background is locally known as the “Matterhorn of Austria”, and when viewed from another angle, shares the same notable shape as the real Matterhorn.

After eating it to decipher its ingredients, it seemed to be some sort of spiced/seasoned turkey slices, a slice of gruyere, some pickled vegetables, cream cheese, garden lettuce, and magnificent fresh hearty bread. After a hot and sunny uphill in the alpine, this was followed up by a swim in the lake, some homemade elderflower juice and rhubarb cake, and picking blueberries on the hike back down into the valley. Idyllic.

About the Sandwich: 12-grain bagel with a delicately spread cream cheese inner coating, hosted within were a few layers of nicely folded chipotle chicken and some romaine lettuce for flair. Not photographed but still important to note was that this sandwich had a twin brother who was consumed during the climb, foreshadowing the eventuality of this scrumptious summit sandwich.

From: Megan Jamer
Location: On the Pamir Plateau, Tajikistan
About the sandwich:
Well Folks, we kept it simple for our lunchtime picnic in Tajikistan. This is somewhat stale bread, unrefridgerated tube meat product (we think or hope beef but cannot read Russian). I would like the record to show that adding tomato paste was also an option, but I opted against – I really wanted the simple experience.

It tasted pretty good. Being surrounded by mountains always makes eating a sandwich feel special. I think this is because you feel productive and accomplished that you’re both in awesome nature, and you had the foresight to put together a picnic for yourself. But I’ll be honest, my biggest motivation for eating this sandwich is that we ate a Snickers bar afterwards.

From: Elliott Hoppe
Location: Gothic Basin, North Cascades, WA
About the sandwich:
This sandwich was carefully crafted the night prior by combining almond butter with St. Dalfour’s wild blueberry jam on two slices of dense and seedy danish mountain bread. So dense was the bread that the sandwich in my pack nearly broke my back the next morning. After an early start and a long drive we started up one of the most beautiful and steep hikes I have ever completed. Once at the top I vivaciously dove into my sandwich with a side of avocado and washed it down with a swig of fresh alpine snowmelt.
